And now we have a very worthy winner of the 12 Ads Of Christmas 2017 crown, and one that came way out of left-field. The BBC have been doing brand adverts for a few years now, but whilst they have been very notable, they usually get drowned out by all the other brands.

Not this year. Oh no. This two-minute stop-motion animated epic is solid through and through, from the plotting, the visuals, the soundtrack and the execution. It celebrates a young girl’s persistence as she follows her dream of performing in her school’s Christmas show, and mixes in the challenges facing single working parents as they balance family and career whilst also preparing for Christmas. The twist is perfectly carried out with a flair that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, paired with a sucker-punch that you will never forget.

The BBC took scenes from this animation as the basis for a set of BBC1 Christmas idents that were fun, sweet and uplifting.

Naturally the Beeb decided to make a “serious” ident for the more serious programmes, such as the news. It’s still very pretty.

This may not be the Christmas advert we expected, but during these rough times of great uncertainty, it was definitely the Christmas advert we needed! Sheer, unadulterated, heartwarming perfection. It had to be our Number One.
