The Best New Christmas Songs

Usually the Christmas Number One is taken up by a forgettable X Factor single, and this year was no exception. However, there were a handful of decent festive tunes which made it to the final Top Forty amongst the regular annual rereleases.

Coming in at number 30, “Underneath The Tree” is a full-on assault of festive love and glad-tidings that is the perfect pick-me-up after a long day at work, and comes complete with a sax solo. Wonderful.

A reality show spin-off, I’m afraid, but one that’s out of the ordinary as ITV grouped together pop stars - and I use the term loosely - who’d had Christmas hits previously. Their cover of “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day” isn’t brilliant, but it did make it to number 21 and was a charity single after all.

Oh this is a good one - starts slowly, but gradually grabs you by the soul and doesn’t let go. “One More Sleep” was the year’s big Christmas song, eventually hitting number three. Together with “Underneath The Tree” we have two decent tracks which should be added to the nation’s Christmas playlist in years to come.

What a wonderful year 2013 was during the run-up to Christmas, but if the John Lewis ad didn’t make the 12 Ads Of Christmas 2013, the quality of those that did should be amazing. And they were...
